Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Production

Overview

Anaerobic digestion is the process by which organic materials such as food wastes, straw, weeds, human or animal excrements, sludge, domestic sewage and organic liquid waste from distilleries and factories are degraded by huge quantities of various microbes of different functions under anaerobic conditions (oxygen-free environment) to generate a methane-rich biogas.

Global warming concerns have focused attention on proper disposal and treatment of wastes which emits large quantities of methane and carbon dioxide, a major contributor of greenhouse gases. To this end, biogas production by anaerobic digestion process is a sustainable technology as a waste treatment system and as a source of renewable energy.
